🌿 Black and Yellow Maca – the Andean root (75 mg + 75 mg, 100:1 extract)
Lepidium meyenii grows above 4,000 metres in Peru, where almost nothing survives: that's why it is the tonic-adaptogen par excellence. The varieties differ by root colour and by their profile of glucosinolates and macamides: Black is the most studied on male vitality [1][3], Yellow is the most widespread and complete. A 2016 randomised study assessed black and red maca extracts on mood, energy and quality of life in adults [2]. In the Italian Ministry list Maca is a tonic against physical and mental tiredness, a tonic-adaptogen, with a metabolic support action; for sexual desire an EFSA claim is under evaluation (ID 2838).
🌿 Tribulus Terrestris – the Ayurvedic tonic (160 mg, 90% saponins)
A plant of Ayurvedic medicine, named after its spiny fruits. Its characterising compounds are steroidal saponins, protodioscin first of all: our fruit extract is standardised to 90%, 144 mg of saponins per capsule. In the Ministry list it is a tonic against physical and mental tiredness with a metabolic support action; for sexual desire an EFSA claim is under evaluation (ID 2831). A 2014 systematic review reminds us that clinical evidence on tribulus is limited [4]: we tell you, because trust is worth more than a promise.
🌿 Organic Moringa Oleifera – the RedMoringa signature (170 mg)
Leaf powder from certified organic farming, packed in Italy: it supports digestive function and lipid metabolism and is the ingredient no other maca supplement has.
🌿 Black pepper – 10:1 extract
Piper nigrum is in the Ministry list for digestive function and regular gastrointestinal motility; piperine is traditionally used to accompany the absorption of other actives.
Scientific background
Maca is among the most studied Andean plants of the last twenty years. Here is what the available studies report:
- Maca, the review — a 2012 review covers the ethnobotany, composition and clinical studies of maca, including the differences between black, yellow and red varieties [1].
- Maca, energy and mood — a 2016 randomised double-blind study in adults assessed black and red maca extracts for 12 weeks on mood, energy and quality of life, with good tolerability [2].
- Maca and semen — a 2001 study in adult men observed changes in semen parameters after 4 months of maca, with no hormonal changes [3].
- Tribulus — a 2014 systematic review concludes that the evidence on tribulus as an aphrodisiac and for performance is limited and inconclusive [4].
- Timing — maca studies last 8-12 weeks: this is why the bottle covers 3 months, one capsule a day.
